A simple appliance maintenance calendar: what to clean and check monthly, seasonally and once a year to prevent breakdowns and extend appliance life.
Most appliance breakdowns do not arrive out of nowhere. They build up quietly, through a clogged filter, a dusty coil, or a seal nobody has wiped in three years. The good news is that a handful of small habits prevents a large share of repair calls. Here is a simple calendar you can actually keep to, sorted by how often each job needs doing.
• Wipe the fridge door seals. A quick wipe with warm soapy water keeps them flexible and sealing properly, which is what stops the fridge overworking.
• Clean the dishwasher filter. Lift it out, rinse the debris away, and check the spray arm holes are clear. This single habit prevents most “dishes are not clean” complaints.
• Run a hot cleaning cycle in the washer. An empty hot wash keeps residue and odour from building up, especially in front loaders.
• Check behind the dryer. Make sure the vent hose is not crushed or kinked, and clear any lint you can see.
• Descale the coffee machine. If you have hard water, monthly descaling keeps flow and temperature where they should be.
• Vacuum the fridge condenser coils. Dust makes the fridge run hotter, longer and less efficiently. This is one of the highest-value jobs on the whole list.
• Clean the washer drain filter. On most front loaders it is behind a small hatch at the bottom front. Keep a towel handy, since water will come out.
• Wash the range hood filters. Grease-clogged filters choke airflow, so degreasing them restores suction.
• Flush the garbage disposal. Run cold water with a tray of ice cubes to clear residue, then a slice of citrus for freshness.
• Replace the fridge water filter. Old filters affect taste and slow the dispenser and ice maker.
• Check hoses on the washer and dishwasher. Look for bulges, cracks or damp spots at the connections. A burst hose is one of the most expensive appliance failures in any home.
• Test oven temperature. Put an oven thermometer on the centre rack, preheat to 180C, and compare. A drift of 15C or more means the sensor or thermostat needs attention.
• Clean the oven and check the door seal. A worn seal lets heat escape, which slows cooking and wastes energy.
• Have the dryer vent professionally cleaned. Lint buildup in the duct is a leading cause of dryer fires, and it is the part homeowners cannot easily reach.
• Defrost the freezer if it is not frost free, and clear the defrost drain on any fridge or freezer that has been pooling water.
• Level and inspect the washer. An unlevel machine vibrates, and vibration wears out bearings and suspension parts early.
• Book a professional check on the appliances you rely on most. A technician spots wear before it becomes a breakdown.
Worth knowing: the three jobs with the biggest payoff on this whole list are vacuuming the fridge coils, clearing the dryer vent, and cleaning the dishwasher filter. If you only do three things, do those.
Maintenance prevents a lot, but not everything. If an appliance is already showing symptoms, such as a fridge that will not stay cold, a washer that will not drain, or an oven that will not heat, that is a repair rather than a cleaning job. Our appliance repair services cover every major appliance across Hamilton and the surrounding area, with flat pricing confirmed upfront.
If you would rather not keep track of any of this, that is exactly what our care plans are for. Labour is included, you get priority scheduling, and every appliance in your home is covered under a single membership. See how the care plans work →
