LG refrigerators are among the most popular in Canadian kitchens, known for the Linear Compressor, Door-in-Door storage and smart cooling. When an LG fridge starts to struggle, a little brand-specific knowledge goes a long way, especially around the compressor and the error codes LG uses. Here is what tends to go wrong, what those codes mean, and when it is time to call a technician.

The Linear Compressor: LG's signature, and its history

LG's Linear Compressor is the heart of the fridge and its calling card. It is efficient and quiet, and LG backs it with a long warranty, often ten years. It is worth knowing, though, that certain LG models from roughly 2014 to 2017 had widely reported linear compressor failures that stopped the fridge cooling. If your LG suddenly stops getting cold while the lights and fans still work, the compressor is one of the first things to suspect.

Common LG fridge problems

•     Not cooling. Either the sealed system and compressor, or a fan or sensor keeping cold air from moving.

•     Ice maker not working. One of the most common LG complaints, often the ice maker assembly, a frozen fill line, or the dispenser.

•     Water dispenser issues. Usually the filter, the inlet valve, or a kinked or frozen line.

•     Warm sections or frost buildup. A fan, sensor or defrost fault affecting airflow.

•     Noisy operation. Commonly a fan, or in some cases the compressor working hard.

LG fridge error codes, explained

LG fridges show error codes that start with Er. Codes vary by model, so check your manual, but these are the ones we see most:

Er It / Er IS	Ice maker fault or sensor. Sometimes clears with an ice maker reset.	Check

Most of these point to an internal part such as a fan, sensor or heater, which needs a technician rather than a DIY fix.

What you can safely check yourself

•     Confirm the temperature settings, and that vents inside are not blocked by food.

•     Vacuum the condenser coils so the fridge is not working harder than it needs to.

•     Check the door seals, and replace the water filter on schedule.

•     For the ice maker, make sure the fill line is not frozen and the arm is in the on position, then try the reset.

Beyond these, anything pointing to a fan, sensor, heater, control board or the sealed system should go to a technician.

Repair or replace an LG fridge?

It comes down to the fault. A linear compressor failure is often repaired at little cost under LG's long warranty, so it is well worth confirming the diagnosis before giving up on the fridge. For other faults such as fans, sensors, the ice maker or the water system, repair is usually the economical choice on a fridge under about eight to ten years old.
