







Dryer running two or three cycles to dry one load? Three simple tests show whether the problem is the vent, the heat or the machine, plus the fire risk to know about.
One load, two cycles. Sometimes three. Towels that come out warm and still damp, and a laundry room that feels like a sauna by the time you are finished. A dryer that takes too long is the most common dryer complaint there is, and it is also the one worth taking most seriously, for reasons that go beyond your hydro bill.
The good news is that you can narrow the cause yourself in about fifteen minutes, without tools, using three simple tests. Each one isolates a different part of the system.
It helps to know what the machine is doing. A dryer does not bake moisture out of clothes. It heats air, pulls that air through the tumbling load so it picks up moisture, then pushes the warm wet air out through the vent. Fresh air comes in behind it and the cycle repeats.
So drying depends on two things working together: heat, and airflow carrying the moisture away. If either one is compromised the load stays damp, and the two failures look identical from the outside. That is what the tests are for.
Test 1 Go outside and feel the exhaust
Start the dryer on a hot cycle with a damp load, then go outside to where the vent exits the wall. You should feel a strong, warm flow of air, enough to be unmistakable. The flap or louvre should be pushed fully open.
Weak flow, or none at all: the problem is airflow, almost certainly a blocked vent or duct. Go to the airflow section below.
Strong warm flow: your venting is clear, so move to Test 2.
While you are there: look for lint packed around the flap, and for signs of a bird nest, which is more common than people expect. Some exterior vents also have an insect screen fitted, and those clog solid within a couple of years. A screen should not be there on a dryer vent at all.
Test 2 Feel the clothes at the end of a cycle
Run a normal cycle and open the door as soon as it finishes. What you feel tells you which of the two requirements is missing.

Test 3 Check what the washer is handing over
This one surprises people. If your washing machine is not spinning properly, clothes arrive in the dryer far wetter than they should be, and the dryer takes far longer as a result. The dryer gets blamed for a washer problem.
The check is simple. Take an item out of the washer at the end of its cycle and squeeze it. If water runs out, or the load feels heavy and sodden rather than damp, the washer is the place to start. Our guide to a washer that tumbles instead of spinning covers why that happens.
This is the cause in the majority of cases, and it builds up so gradually that most people never notice until cycles have doubled.
Clearing the screen after every load is standard advice, and most people do it. What far fewer people do is clean the housing the screen sits in, where lint collects below the filter, or wash the screen itself. If you use dryer sheets, a film builds up on the mesh that you cannot see but that air struggles to pass through. Run water over the screen: if it pools rather than passing straight through, it needs washing with hot soapy water.
The short duct between the machine and the wall gets crushed when the dryer is pushed back into place. Flexible foil and plastic ducting is the worst offender, because the ribbed interior collects lint and creates drag along its whole length. Rigid or semi rigid metal ducting performs considerably better and is safer.
Long runs and multiple elbows both cost airflow. Every bend adds resistance equivalent to several extra feet of straight duct, so a dryer venting through a long, winding path will never perform like one with a short straight run. Lint accumulates in these runs and eventually chokes them.
Covered in Test 1, and worth repeating because it is the single most neglected part of the system.
If clothes come out cool and damp, the heating side is at fault. What has failed depends on the type of dryer.
• Electric dryers: the heating element is the usual suspect, along with thermostats and the thermal fuse. A blown thermal fuse generally means no heat at all rather than reduced heat, and it is worth knowing that a thermal fuse usually blows because of restricted airflow. Replacing it without clearing the vent just means it blows again.
• Gas dryers: the igniter is the most common failure, followed by the gas valve coils and the flame sensor. The symptom is often intermittent, where the dryer heats on some cycles and not others.
• Both types: a failed cycling thermostat can leave the dryer producing some heat but never reaching proper temperature.
A dryer that takes too long is not just inconvenient. Restricted airflow is the leading cause of dryer fires, because lint is highly flammable and heat that cannot escape builds up inside the machine and the duct.
Treat these as reasons to stop using the dryer until it has been checked:
• A burning smell during or after a cycle
• The top of the dryer or the clothes being extremely hot to the touch
• The dryer shutting itself off partway through a cycle, which often indicates a thermal safety device tripping
• Visible lint accumulating around the exterior vent or behind the machine
Worth acting on: the same restriction that doubles your drying time is what creates the fire risk. Fixing the airflow solves both problems at once, which is why this is one of the few appliance issues genuinely worth dealing with promptly.
• Clean the lint screen every load, and wash it with hot soapy water every few months if you use dryer sheets.
• Do not overload. Clothes need room to tumble, because air has to circulate between them. A packed drum dries slowly no matter how healthy the machine is.
• Dry similar fabrics together. A single heavy towel in a load of light shirts means either damp towels or overdried shirts.
• Run loads back to back while the machine is already warm, which is more efficient than starting cold each time.
• Have the vent professionally cleaned once a year, particularly if the duct run is long or you cannot see the whole length of it.
